The game wasn’t difficult. My mother, my sister, and I dutifully obeyed the careful instructions. Claire Elise, my sister’s four-year-old granddaughter, patiently explained how we should close our eyes as she hid various treasures around the room. No peeking!
With a giggle that held all the wonder of a Christmas morning, she invited us to open our eyes and begin our search. She breathlessly offered helpful hints until all of the items were retrieved. Dozens of rounds were played so we could all have turns being the “hider”. After what she deemed the end of the game, she pointed to each of us in turn and declared, “You’re a winner, and you’re a winner, and you’re a winner.” Then she pointed to herself and said, “And me, of course!”
That kind of joy is infectious! I love the way she encouraged us as we wandered through the room feigning inability to see her treasures. I truly felt like a winner when she declared it so. I also love that she didn’t hesitate to congratulate herself.
I have the priceless joy of many friends who are fantastic encouragers. They’re quick to send a happy text or gif—sometimes even a handwritten note in the mail–when they think of me. Delivering meals to sick friends, anonymously giving money when needed, thoughtful gifts for no reason at all—I’ve seen them do it all. Some of them seem to do . . . and do . . . and do for others with no thought for themselves.
If you’re that person, on behalf of all the people you encourage, please accept this tight virtual hug from me. I know you don’t want credit for the sweet things you do. Acknowledgment and accolades don’t drive you, and might even embarrass you. Just don’t forget what Claire Elise seems to know intuitively. Be nice to yourself. Yes, the people you love on are extraordinarily valuable. But so are you, of course!
Love this as usual ! Hugs to you ❤️
